Witherspoon was brought up as an Episcopalian. She began taking acting lessons after being chosen as a model for a florist’s television commercials when she was just seven years old.
She won first place at the Ten-State Talent Fair when she w as 11 years old. She was academically successful, a voracious reader, and thought of herself as “a big nerd who read heaps of books.”
She graduated from Nashville’s all-girls Harpeth Hall School, where she cheered, and went to Harding Academy for middle school.

Witherspoon began her career as a teenager, making her screen debut in The Man in the Moon (1991). Her breakthrough came in 1999 with a supporting role in Cruel Intentions, and for her portrayal of Tracy Flick in the black comedy Election.
Her roles as Elle Woods in the comedies Legally Blonde (2001) and its sequel, as well as her appearance in the romantic comedy Sweet Home Alabama, helped her earn more notoriety (2002).
She earned the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2005 for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the musical biopic Walk the Line, which received positive reviews from critics.
